Master Yongming Yanshou strongly advocated the unity of principle and practice, emphasizing the essential meaning of dual cultivation of Ch'an and Jing, which means practicing both meditation and mindfulness of the Buddha. He composed the Brief on Ch'an And Jing's Four Categories: "With Ch'an and without Jing practice, of ten persons, nine will detour on their path; the intermediate state between death and rebirth, if manifesting before them, it will swiftly be followed according to their karmic inclinations. Without Ch'an and with Jing practice, of ten thousand cultivators, ten thousand will go to Jing; if seeing Amitabha Buddha, do not worry about awakening. With Ch'an and with Jing practices, cultivators are similar to tigers bearing horns; present lives as humans' teachers, future lives become Buddhas. Without Ch'an and without Jing practices, iron beds and bronze pillars await them; for ten thousand kalpas and thousands of lives, they will have no person to rely on." From the above, we can understand the importance of dual cultivation of Ch'an and Jing.

永明延壽禪師極力主張理事合一，禪淨雙修之要義，亦即參禪念佛兼修也，乃作四料簡曰： 「有禪無淨土，十人九蹉路， 陰境若現前，瞥爾隨他去。 無禪有淨土，萬修萬人去， 但得見彌陀，何愁不開悟。 有禪有淨土，猶如戴角虎， 現世為人師，來生為佛祖。 無禪無淨土，鐵床並銅柱， 萬劫與千生，沒個人依怙。 」 由此可知，禪淨雙修的重要性了。
